Bulletin "BOARD"

With appreciation and best wishes to
Attorney Mary Ann Fabrizi.

After serving over nine years as a board member for Mahoning County Children Services Board, Attorney Mary Ann Fabrizi has decided to end her term with the Board.

Attorney Fabrizi has served as Vice Chair, Secretary to the Board, as a member of the Personnel Committee, the Nominating Committee, and as a member of the Finance Committee, which she eventually chaired.

We appreciate her leadership as a Board member and will miss her dedication to the children and families that we serve.

Choosing correctly between affect and effect is a long-standing dilemma for writers. Simply remember affect is a verb (a so-called “action word”) and effect is a noun (a thing).

Correct usage example: Even the best counselors cannot immediately affect the painful emotional effect a child feels after having been abused.

TIP: “That” is the most unnecessarily used word in the English language. After having constructed a sentence with “that” in it, simply remove “that” and, in most instances, the sentence will lose nothing in terms of context and clarity and what remains is a more concise, “tighter” sentence. Most unedited text of 500 words or more has at least five unnecessary uses of “that”.

By the way…it’s “jibe” NOT “jive”! When noting two or more things do not agree or make sense together, say/write “Those things don’t jibe.” The word “jive” refers to nonsensical talk or jazz and the vernacular of its musicians.

E-mail me your English questions at pkm32mpf@aol.com and I’ll give you my words.
